At iftar, Obama embraces Ground Zero mosque
IN THE NEWS: President Obama welcomed Muslim leaders from across the country Friday to the White House for an annual Ramadan iftar. During his address, he mentioned that the first White House iftar was held by Thomas Jefferson about 200 years ago. The President used the event as an opportunity to show his support for the proposed Muslim Community Center near ground zero in New York City.
“This is America,” the president said said. “Our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable.”
As many as 70% of American oppose the mosque plans, according to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll.
Obama also mentioned that three Muslim American soldiers who lost their lives in Iraq “and now rest among the heroes of Arlington National Cemetery” will be honored at a Pentagon iftar next week.
