As brothers Husain and Hamza Abdullah continue to make headlines for fasting while preparing for their NFL season, a high school football team is gaining attention as well. “Fordson” is a feature-length documentary film that follows four star Muslim football players from a high school in Dearborn, Mich., as they prepare for their season during the month of Ramadan.
Peter Sanders, famous photographer of the rock and roll greats of the 60′s and 70′s, was one of the first Westerners to photograph the Hajj, the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. He later embraced Islam himself.
IN THE NEWS: The Boston Globe photography team has published its annual Ramadan photo collection showing Muslim men and women across the world observing the holy month. But this year, the editors invite budding photographers to share photos they feel define Ramadan for them and their loved ones.
While intensifying anti-Muslim rhetoric in this nation alone is cause for concern, on Wednesday came news of a Muslim cab driver (pictured) in New York City stabbed by a 21-year-old film student. Meanwhile, a drunk man entered a mosque in Queens, shouting at worshippers while urinating on prayer rugs. In times like these, we can’t help but feel threatened. We can’t help but ask, are we even seen as being American in this nation, or are we seen as a foreign threat or, worse, an enemy?
IN THE NEWS: Besides being a month focused on spirituality, Ramadan is also a time for celebration. In Istanbul, a project called “Ramadan’da Caz” (Jazz in Ramadan) is bringing together “the essence of Ramadan entertainment with modern cultural tastes.”
The web is overflowing with delicious recipes from around the world for Ramadan which is only a few weeks away. Epicurious is known for offering unique yet tasty concoctions on there website. For Ramadan the staff has compiled a set of recipes from the Arab world, selected African regions and Pakistan.
On his debut album “Thank You Allah,” singer Maher Zain blends contemporary R&B with traditional nasheed to revive Islamic music for the young generation. Lena Khan, a graduate from UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, directed the music video for “The Chosen One” a spiritual song inspired by the Prophet Muhammad. The video went online this week.

IN THE NEWS: Holy Land, a specialty foods company owned by a Middle-Eastern Muslim family in Minneapolis is whipping up some popularity as it tries to get shelf-space for its hummus at major retailers like Costco and Target. The company’s success in a place so entrenched in traditional Midwestern food and values is impressive.
Maybe you saw him play Raza in “Iron Man.” Perhaps you caught him as Captain Robau in “Star Trek.” And all you girls out there that are thinking “Eww, I don’t watch action movies?” Well… he’s conquered your world too, as a guest star this past season on “Grey’s Anatomy.” His name is Faran Tahir, a 47-year-old Pakistani-American who’s been in the acting game for decades and is proof that you don’t always have to go to the doctor-lawyer-engineer-banker route to be successful.

Sure, freedom of speech is a value we respect in America and Muslims must be tolerant and accepting of others’ views, regardless of how offensive or demeaning they may be. But how, then, does a country whose constitution vows to protect the image of Islam’s prophet carry out that responsibility?
IN THE NEWS: What’s better than being a waifish bearded Brooklynite? How about being Iranian, in a band and living to tell a pretty epic story.
Why the writers of the movie chose to adopt so many stereotypes in a movie that was supposed to break down barriers is beyond me.
