IN THE NEWS: In the midst of all of the current debate about what is plauging the Muslim community, a Muslim jurist has written a compelling piece on how the community’s leadership vaccum, lack of youth involvement in leadership circles, and lack of institutional innovation foster extremism, stangnacy, and apathy.
By now many of us have seen the recent Leonardo DiCaprio film “Inception” and left the theater chattering about the dream world created in the movie. What did the ending mean? Do we naturally dream ideas into our subconscious that affect our lives? And how powerful are these dreamed perceptions? Well, Inception for Muslims and many others isn’t just make believe. It likely happened at a mosque near you, although probably in a less dramatic fashion.
IN THE NEWS: The Central Intelligence Agency’s stance on assassinating alleged terrorists who hold U.S. Citizenship, including a controversial Yemeni American Imam, brings to light new legal, ethical and social questions regarding the erosion of civil and citizenship rights.
A New York-based Muslim website warned last week that the creators of “South Park” could soon meet the same fate as a Dutch director who was killed in 2004. The warning came after an episode depicted the Prophet Muhammad in a bear costume. Regardless of the cartoon’s content, this reference to a past act of violence was unacceptable and a disturbing reminder to all Muslims that we cannot allow for one individual or group to speak for all of us while not accounting for the diversity of the community.
IN THE NEWS: Islam gives women the freedom and the right to keep their last name after marriage. However, cultural norms, tradition, and patriarchal perceptions of marriage have impacted the way the Muslim world perceives a Muslim woman’s freedom to exercise this right.
IN THE NEWS: A new case that was underway Friday in New York City is analyzing the impact upon our First Amendment freedom of speech and Fourth Amendment right to privacy. The case addresses warantless wiretapping in the post 9/11 era which directly impacted Muslim individuals, organizations, and businesses.
Four out of the last seven winners for “Best Actress” split with their husbands soon after receiving their awards, and a large number of former award winners suffered a similar fate. But does this supposed curse only strike Hollywood’s leading ladies, or is it something that all women, including Muslim women, need to be concerned about?
