IN THE BLOGOSPHERE: Muslim students from the University of Wisconsin in Madison led a small and commendable protest last week. The Athiests, Humanists, and Agnostics (AHA!) student group drew stick figures of “Muhammad” in midst a week when some were provoking Muslims with drawings of the Prophet Muhammad.
IN THE NEWS: Mohammad Ibrahim was recently in the United States and sat down for a compelling interview with Charlie Rose about leadership in Africa. A Sudanese-born, British telecom chief executive turned philanthropist, Ibrahim is a role-model for American-Muslim executives with accumulating wealth and resources. He is the founder of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, which has developed an innovative strategy to bring about good governance initiatives in Africa.
This week, the White House convened the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship, a two-day assembly of some of the most innovative and inspiring entrepreneurs from Muslim majority countries.
IN THE NEWS: This month, Tariq Ramadan, the outspoken Oxford University professor of contemporary Islamic studies spoke at Georgetown University. He touched on reform in Islam and offered a path to integration for the millions of Muslims in the West. I thought it was enlightening at a time when Muslims like me are thirsting for leading intellectual voices who can effectively convey that there is no place for violence and terrorism in Islam while they simultaneously and effectively challenge policies grounded in Islamophobia and racism.
IN THE BLOGOSPHERE:President Obama, in an interview on NBC’s Today Show, explained how he understood the Tea Party Movement. Some movement supporters are misguidedly convinced that Obama espouses a surreptitious socialist agenda. As Muslim-Americans, we have a stake in this conversation.
